Our Mission

At Pacific Heights Health Club, we are dedicated to creating healthy lifestyles – one person at a time.
Here, you can feel comfortable being yourself. You can connect with old friends and make new ones, and you’ll see and feel the results of making healthy lifestyle choices. Best of all, you’ll discover that fitness happens while you’re laughing and having fun.
The three words that best describe how we make this happen are:

In The Beginning…

Back in 1984, when the club first opened its doors, PHHC was a men’s only facility and occupied what is now the weight room and locker rooms.  The owner, Kenneth Craig Lapan or as most people called him, KC, wanted to pay homage to the times he spent with his father who brought KC to the gym to work out with him.  David Kirk was one of the staff on opening night, and eventually became the owner when KC fell ill.  A few years later, the space that is now the cardio room became Pacific Heights Health Club for Women.

Along Came Amy

Twenty years later in June of 2004, I took over as owner of the club. Raised in Michigan, I moved to San Francisco after graduating from the University of Michigan and fell in love with the Bay Area. Obviously, I decided to stay.
After spending 10 years in the high technology industry at amazing companies like Netscape, Oracle and Yahoo, I came to understand that I was meant to follow a different path – one that tapped into my lifelong interest in health and wellness.
Growing up, it seemed like all the women in my family were slim. I got my dad’s genes so pretty much I’ve always struggled with my weight. While working at Yahoo, my last corporate job (and the wrong job for me), I gained about 15 pounds in just 6 months. That’s when I finally decided to ask for help and hired a personal trainer. I’m forever grateful for Asanta. With her, I discovered and experienced a new world. I lost weight, and I got stronger and fitter, and I gained confidence that I didn’t know was in me.

Our Passion

During that same period of time – late 2003, the news coverage on the rising rate of obesity quadrupled. Why? Because so many Baby Boomers had turned 50 and the “epidemic” of our modern day sedentary lifestyle was leading to unprecedented increases in the incidence of chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes which were and still are driving up the cost of health care.  Of course, our culture of quick fix was only exacerbating the problem.
I decided that I wanted to be part of the real solution. And that’s the purpose of Pacific Heights Health Club.

PHHC Today

Fast forward to today. We have grown to a team of 16 fitness and wellness experts. The club now occupies the entire building. From the street, you’ll see members warming up on cardio equipment. Once through the breezeway, you’ll discover the training studio that boasts a 16′ x 16′ fully retractable skylight. Upstairs, to complement the strength training programs, we offer a full slate of wellness services, including Pilates, physical therapy, acupuncture, private yoga and therapeutic massage.
Now, instead of spending my time convincing people to adopt new technologies, I focus my energies on helping people make healthier choices.
Whether it’s improving your golf or tennis game, hiking up Machu Picchu, playing with your grandkids or dancing at your daughter’s wedding, we’re here to inspire, support and coach.
Maybe you need more motivation.
Maybe you need more accountability.
Maybe you need more know-how.
Or maybe you need to get out of pain…
Or get stronger, lose fat and inches, and feel better…
