Celebrating the thirty first Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Act

As an individual with lived expertise of psychological sickness, addictions, and trauma, I contemplate July 26 – the thirty first anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (ADA) – to be our nation’s second Independence Day. For the hundreds of thousands of us with disabilities, it’s a day to rejoice our freedom. Freedom from discrimination and the obstacles that block our inclusion in neighborhood life. Freedom from unjustified segregation and institutionalization. Freedom to earn and to study. Freedom to pursue restoration and obtain providers and helps – together with psychological well being and dependancy providers – that assist us take part absolutely in American life.

Over the previous 31 years, America has made important progress in defending and implementing the civil rights of individuals with disabilities – together with these of us with psychological sickness and/or addictions.
